So we've got an anime recommendation thread, and after finishing up one of the series that's been collecting dust on my shelf for a few years, I've decided that I need to start the un-recommendation thread.  I know it's hard to come up with objective arguments for why a show is bad and that people are bound to disagree with someone else's assessment, but let's try to keep it civil and have fun with it.

I'll start things off with the aforementioned show: Masou Kishin Cybuster, a delightful turd from 1999.  Now, if you've played any of the Super Robot Wars games or watched the Original Generation animes, you may be familiar with Cybuster:

The hot-blooded young man in the green hair is its pilot, Masaki.  The machine itself was created in another dimension and is basically powered by magic.  If you have to kill everything on the map, you drain this guy's power to Cyflash everything into oblivion.  And that's not even his most powerful move.  He's also got a sword, a battery of missiles, and remote weaponry, all of which come in handy when dealing with his chief rival: the Granzon.  It's piloted by Shu Shirakawa and has the power to shoot black holes at you.

Well, what they did when they made the show is that they took the names of things, threw away most of the awesome mecha designs present in the SRW games, added a bunch of new characters, and gave it no budget.  And when I say no budget, I mean no budget.  You can count individual frames and easily pick out numerous cost-cutting measures present in the animation.  Now, I've watched plenty of mecha shows from the 70s and 80s with poor animation, but for something made in 1999, it's eye-poppingly bad.

But that's forgivable if at least the robot fights are badass, right?  Maybe, except these robots are anything but.  Even the advanced models rolled out by the villains as the show progresses retain clunky, plodding maneuverability.  They spend a lot of time falling over.  Even the robot gods like Cybuster end up getting knocked backwards by punches, kicks, or poorly-aimed projectile attacks (and their associated recycled animation).  Granzon still has a black hole gun, but it was redesigned to look more like the Guntank than anything else.  None of the battles really have any tension since they develop so slowly and result in little to no payoff.  Even Big O, which prides itself on immobile clunky robots, at least looks awesome when it finally does attack.

So to summarize, it's a show about trans-dimensional elemental robot gods fighting an enemy which attacks using black holes and the robots are boring.  They use Cyflash once, and you have to wait until the end of episode 25 for it.  In fact, he doesn't even have his sword from the games or really any of his moves.  He punches, kicks, throws wind at you, and... yeah.  Why they would bother making a show if they couldn't retain the elements of the game that make him awesome is beyond me.

Most of the characters I won't complain about.  They're pretty stock characters and the show plays every trope straight.  What really annoys me is after the abrupt conclusion in episode 25, we get an epilogue which serves as backstory for someone who's already died, revealing a relationship that had been out in the open for half the time.  And on a personal note, I really dislike what they did with Lune, converting her from a hot-blooded warrior woman into a selfish brat who can't pilot worth a crap.

So it's a cut-and-dried super robot show minus the fun and QUALITY that will keep you on the edge of your seat, because then it's easier to get up and go do something else.  I must say that licensing this sure didn't do Geneon any favors.  Back on my shelf where it shall forever remain.

I heard that when Geneon licensed this crap heap, less than 100 people bought it on dvd. As for my personal crap show, one I have unpleasant memories of is a little series known as Moe-tan. I honestly wished I could jump through a time portal and punch myself in the face Gurren Lagann style for watching that show.

bobobo-bo bo-bobo reason being for me that is the comedy is very hysterical and the series in itself is to broad and most of the humor i find pointles.

I think the oppisate. I found it utterly hillarious. I love randomness, fouth wall breaking sillyness so I might be in the minornity (I was rather dispointed it ended midway though an arc and that the Manga hasn't been released in english outside a single volume and that I can't find ANY subs of the japanese version)

If your an orginal voltron fan stay away from the new voltron release it really does bring shame to the original voltorn series. However if I were to compare the old thunder cats to the new thunder cats release I woudl say the new release is looking good.

I saw a few episodes subbed several years ago, and there were some funny bits, but I couldn't really get into it.  Although they'll soon be releasing it on DVD, so you'll be able to get subs.

Small list of anime to avoid:

- Powerpuff Girls Z
- Crush Gear
- BeyBlade
- Totally Spies! (if you even call that an anime)
- Beyblade G Revolution
- Beyblade V-Force

TO NAME A FEW

Beyblade to me is an anime series that belongs on 4kids network and really has no fanbase above14.

Now...I freely call myself a noob.  I am relatively new to the world of otaku and while I have been watching some anime for years, I have only recently accepted my otaku-ness.  There are a few animes I have come across that I simply hate, some have been mentioned, others I think are more matters of opinion and don't really qualify.  But there was an anime series that was just...oh dear goddess it was awful and shouldn't be viewed by anyone.  I may get some hate for this but...

Ogre Slayer.

o.o that is by far, the most messed up anime I have ever seen.  I first caught a good glimpse of it when I was 10, recorded on a VHS tape.  And...dear gods...looking back, it is as though they wanted to cram in as much disturbing material as they could.  I couldn't really get a good idea of the plot except some kind killed ogres, which did horrid and depraved things to people.  That's about as much as I could stomach.  I may get different opinions, but this is my two cents.

add tai-chi chasers and a couple of 4kids' other "Cashime" to the list.

and totally spies is from france.  according to the interwebs, it was bad but not AS horrible over there.  Winx Club was supposedly pretty decent with a full out war arc in its original italian version, but was as usual butchered like a bleeding fish in a shark swarm by 4kids when they imported it and rewrote it completely for american audiences.

beyblade is another cashime, a show made specifically to sell toys to kids and make money.  sometimes, these are good, as evidenced by early pokemon and yugioh seasons, and transformers.  others.... the most polite way to describe them is utter mindless poorly-animated crap.

back on the subject of japanese animated stuff, avoid the godzilla cartoon in all it's incarnations.  some parts of the 70's need to stay there.  and 70's spidey, live action AND animated.  watch them for the lulz, otherwise you will get retro culture burns.  adding cutouts of the MST3K crew to the corner of your tv helps, but not really.

also, somewhere in this world there is something called "tournament of the gods"  avoid it, it's all the hentai parts of a 60-episode series from the late 70's all hacked out and squished into one set of 3 "episodes" and imported with some of the worst dubbing known to man straight-to-video.  i ran across it in college, scary stuff.

Spiderman Tokusatsu show - It is REALLY bad.  Although Leopardon is a bright point of the show (Spiderman has a giant robot)
Kyuuruu Sentai Zyuranger - If you like MMPR just say no to this, the first 7 episodes will destroy your childhood.
Step Up Love Story - NOOOOOO!!!!! Really really bad etchi anime
Gottomon - Full title I believe is "Butt Attack Girl Gottomon"  It is so bad you cannot MST3K it or have an enjoyable drinking game with it.  After about 15 minutes you want to gouge your eyes out
Your fate is mine to decide

giant flying robot.... *twitch*  never get past trying to figure out why he's some kind of a ninja with a flying robot, can't watch it for very long seriously.  i found one good fansub where the guy literally just made up his own story, rewrote the theme song's lyrics, and generally messed with the entire thing, it was hilarious and still counts as my favorite fansub ever.

zyuranger is not for the faint of heart or those who love power rangers like a religion.  child-killing monsters, super fashionable stone-age wardrobes complete with velour capes, and yellow is a man.

oh, and the yugioh series with the naked alien.... yeah, worse than the motorcycle one, stay away, seriously.  i just recently via a 15 year old yugitard was forced to sit through several episodes, and seriously lost brain cells to sheer death-by-wtf-ness.  he knows nothing of how to even PLAY the card game, but he's running around with a naked alien as an invisible friend playing card games for... um, i assume the fate of the world as usual or some junk?  i couldn't understand most of it... and this is from someone who actually watched the original yugioh for a while, and has even the tolerance to watch "Space Ninja" and can't make it through that thing.

oh yeah, that reminds me... "space ninja: sword of the space ark".  live action wtf from the 70's.  i have yet to see find the original series the footage was butchered from to see if it's bad or not, but the "king bee video" dub brought over is the entire series hacked apart and fused into something resembling a movie that not even mst3k would touch.  why is sailor moon flying a glowing space boat?  why is chewbacca talking about bananas the entire time?  why do they never explain the sudden magical boy transformation of the heroes into fishnet-covered spandex uniforms with swords?  someday, i want to drag the vhs with me to a con and talk them into giving me a video room to let people witness it, just to share the pain.  in other words, unless your cheeze tolerance is at wisconsin dairy farmer levels, avoid like the plague.

oh, and "wicked city".  if you or your friends ever want to aquire fear of the female nether regions, watch this movie.  otherwise... no.  teeth in places teeth don't belong. X_X
