Considering I run Colossalcon's Cosplay department and work very closely with the security team, I can tell you 100% you are wrong.  In fact, I've gone to cons where live steel was actually allowed (A&G Ohio) and their prop policy was less intrusive/less annoying then Tekko's has always been.

Considering I've also attended Acen in a set of Spartan armor (Halo) with the two plasma rifles, and not a single person THE ENTIRE DAY said a single thing to me.  I had more interactions posing with Nabeshin then I did with security or staff.  Same as Otakon, as I did a Pyramid Head costume there, with a 7 foot wooden "knife" and my rear hanging out and never had a single issue (in this same costume, I was harassed MULTIPLE times at Tekko - when it was in the Radison).  Tekko is the ONLY con I've seen where peopel are harassed over it.

The fix for this is easy.  Make a black and white area for what is allowed and what is not.  If security sees someone violating the policy, deal with it as such.

Also, if you're bringing a loaded air soft con to an aime convention, you're not only stupid, you're kind of a prick.  Personal responsibility has to come into play at some point in time...instead of having staff babysit for you, why not ask yourself, "Is this a good idea?".

I only got one thing to say about this, it's all fun and games till someone gets hurt.

Frankly, I agree with the band comment.  I think Tekko needs to focus on getting back to being a decent regular con before trying to shoebox itself into a specialized con.  There are a couple of things that seem to be catered towards forcing the crowd into a Japan only mindset, when the crowd itself is a bit more open than that.  Sure, allowing the occasional Homestuck, MLP, or Doctor Who panel is a pretty good start, but what about bringing in a K-pop guest?  Or something as simple as allowing Kpop into the dance competition, which I heard was not allowed this year (despite it never being a problem in the masq?)  Instead of so much focus on bands or toku stuff, why not bring in mangaka, or even a US artist or animator?  Or something video game related?  Honestly, what's more important--sticking to a theme, or giving the people who attend what they want?  I know it's thought the band thing is going to be a big money maker, but with cons like Otakon trying to start separate music only festivals (regardless of whether that endeavor was a success or not) you need to have the basics down to grab the people who AREN'T there for the music and just want a con.  And I'll stake my hat on that being the majority of your attendees.

I'm always accused of just knowing a specific crowd (a pretty darn large one) but pretty much everyone I know that goes to cons goes to a con because it's a con that's in their area.  Very few make big travel plans for specific guests, they're more like an added bonus.  And a lot of people come for cosplay, and still won't come to Tekko despite the location and the awesome competition Patches runs because it seems like it's just there because it has to be.  4 pm for a Masq is kind of insulting when in most cons, it's one of the biggest events--and the crowd it draws here should show that holds true.  If your bands are forcing it to be that early... you might have too many. :/

BUT other than my massive wall of feedback I had a much better time than I was expecting.  I seriously commend the attendees--I didn't witness any ridiculous or immature behavior.  Maybe it was the hotel being so far away, but I also didn't have any creepy drunks stumbling around.  No problems with staff this year either.  Everyone was pretty chill, and I know the space was a big factor in that.  It's a huge relief.

Wow glad to see you are back on the forums too Feytaline. Yeah I pretty much agree with most of the points you brought up and you worded it much better than I could. I would love to see a mangaka at Tekko as it would be a change of pace compared to VA and band every year. I wouldn't mind things that are related to Japanese culture or influenced by anime as long as it doesn't turn into K-Pop Con or Who Con. Maybe this is just me being an older otaku but wouldn't be cool if there were like VA that did Transformers(Seriously if you can get Frank Welker that would be awesome because of all the different voices he has done over the years) or Avatar (Nick cartoon series not the blue people lol)?

Also I feel that the Panelist deserve more in perks/rewards for creating panels. Even if it's not viable to do free passes there are other things and ways to make people happy. Like 50% off the full price of a weekend pass, a Tekko t-shirt or bag, a secret panelist only raffle for free tickets to next year's con. Just give them SOMETHING better cause I can tell you from personal experience that the only reason I stopped thinking of ideas of panels was because of the 10 bucks off deal sucks.

I know Artist tables are valuable at the con but let's face it some of the artist are just scrapping by or depend on the revenue that they would make from sales for real life stuff. I highly doubt that some artists would come back year after year if they weren't making a profit and sticking a high price for a table isn't going to help them anymore. When I found out how much a table cost I gasped and felt bad for some of my friends that were will to sell stuff at their tables knowing that it wasn't going to be easy.

I hope staff can talk to the other local hotels to see if they can get a better deal on rooms and/or hotels closer to the con.

P.S. please have signs to the art show or put it in a better room because I honestly didn't even know there was an art show this year until after the con.

When they were found, the cheerleaders were being escorted out.  I talked to a PS staffer who was relating his experiences doing it.

Cool, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who noticed this and PS had it covered. :)

I love your Yu-Gi-Oh Trivia panel. It was very well done and I like how you didn't narrow it to just the original series when it came to trivia questions! Plus cool Katsuya Junouchi cosplay. I hope you do more panels next year too! :)

I might as well put a disclaimer right away. I'm gonna be that guy. So please read my post with an open mind and don't flame the crap out of me.

I just don't want to see the con I've loved for so long start to die off. It's one of the last things I want to see happen and while the numbers are against my statement, I've also talked to many people who share my views on the way the cons been going. I love Tekko and I see issues. I see where there could be improvement. I just hope you guys will take this into some consideration and maybe bring back some of what made Tekko so much fun.

If you made it to the end of this, thank you for reading and I hope you kept an open mind.

Wow this guy doesn't need flamed, you need a freaking high-five! I agree with JoeMello on if you aren't a minion or staffer that you should apply to be one. I seriously agree with most of the points that you made on Tekko's focus on the bands and giving VO's as a second thought as of recently plus we should have some gaming VO actors here. I'm not bashing the bands because this year's picks were good, it's just to optimize on getting more people here the staff should have a healthy balance of bands and VO presence. I have been saying this for years and I hate to say it sounded like my voice was muted as a con goer in previous years because I wasn't considered a "majority" or "the target audience" of the con going audience when I brought this up before (despite me going to every Tekko since the 2nd one just saying). Any way here's my cents below.

Yay for us being back in the convention center. I get that we didn't have the numbers the last time we were there but I still felt we made steps backwards when we were at the old Hilton/Wydham hotel. Good to hear that we exceeded the attendance goal this year.

The Good

The Artist Alley/Dealer's Room: I can't stress on how much it made sense to have both in the same room. Plus it was good to have AA before the DR so the artist had time to shine and get people to buy stuff before going to DR.

The Staff: You guys did a good job aside from one exception. Most were pretty nice and helpful. Plus the one's that dealt with audio and video did a good job of being there as fast as possible when something went wrong especially Randy even though he was teased in a good way for it.

The variety of panels: It was a lot better overall variety of panels this year. I especially enjoyed the Sengokumon, Internet Roleplaying for Newbs, Yu-Gi-Oh Trivia, Politics and War of Mecha Anime, and The Golden Age of Anime panels. Keep it up!

The Bad

The lack of checking badges of certain little girls: There was a cheerleading thing going on I think Saturday in another part of the convention center which was fine and all but once it was done there was a group of them that came by the con floor where the panels were without badges that checked out things. I know that everyone can't be checked but this seemed to be a big breach of security for those that paid 50+ dollars to go to a con while a group of little girls can roam around for free for who knows how long.

The Pokemon Panels: I'm a huge fan of the series and I'm kind of sad that the Pokemon tourney and general Pokemon info(especially since Pokemon X and Y was announced) panels weren't here this year(not really a staff issue if the people running it didn't apply) but while I do get that CreepyPasta is popular it wasn't really my thing and gave it a chance(which is fine and I'm not bashing it but related to my complaint). The second panel that was done by this same person was one of the worst that I been to. Pokemon Jeopardy! was so unorganized, and half of the questions were worded wrong or the answers were incorrect because the person running trusted wikis(a fact which was proven at the panel by the panelist herself and other people in the audience correcting her) and some questions you wouldn't had a clue about the answer unless you like CreepyPasta. I felt bad for the contestants because the rules and kept changing plus some of them got right answers only to lose points for a random spur of the moment rule change. If this person does it next year please check out the Yu-Gi-Oh Trivia panel or Tekko game shows for reference of how to do a better game. The only exception to this was the Sengokumon panel. Thanks to the people who ran that one as it awesome.

The Ugly:

Why was there this one guy that was at most of the panels that I was at just cutting off the panelist adding his two cents and debating/arguing with panelist for stuff that didn't really matter? This guy just kept asking why didn't panelist add certain topics to the panel, or saying the panelist was wrong/stupid for not agreeing with him. It came off as rude to me and I felt bad for the panelist that had it done to them at these panels plus I wouldn't have been bothered by it if it wasn't for the fact that it was the same guy in all of these cases. There should be a general polite rule to people who are doing panels and to save comments and concerns for after the con. I seriously hope that guy does a panel next year so he knows how it feels.

The late notice of one panel that I went to. It was the under appreciated video games panel. It sounded like a great panel but the panelist said they never got a notice that they were supposed to do the panel and didn't know their panel was approved of until the con started. I felt bad about it because it seemed like some one on the panel staff just forgot to contact one group out of the many people that got accepted panels and the half the people that was supposed to do it didn't know until the last minute so the girls doing had to improvise because they thought their panel was rejected. It wasn't their fault and I felt bad about it because they seemed disappointed but tried their best to do a panel at such short notice.

Bag check issue, It's minor and it was just one person as the rest of the staff was really nice and professional about it. On Saturday I bought a few things from Artist Alley and Dealer's Room and wanted to get my bookbag to put the items in my bookbag but the one female staffer doing bag check didn't want to bring out my bag. She told me that she would put my items in the tub with my stuff. Now if I bought a tub for just my stuff I would be a little ok with that but I was sharing one with strangers as I didn't pay 5 dollars for it and I would have felt more comfortable with it if I could have just put my own stuff in my bag. I even asked her politely to just bring the tub and I would put my stuff in my bag but she kept telling me no. Eventually I caved and let her take my bag in the back and put it in the tub herself. But the thing is if I'm spending money on a bag check and spending a lot of money at the con I want to make sure my stuff is safe and still there when I come back. I know it's the whole honor system but not everyone is honest and let's face it accidents happen. I would have been very upset if someone stole my stuff that I just bought or accidently got lost or mistakenly taken by someone.
