Tekkoshocon Convention Chair Blog

Welcome friends!

2011-12-08 19:26

Hello all! I am super excited to share a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes preparing for Tekko with all of you over the coming months. I guess I’ll start by telling you a little bit about me and what I do.

My name is Jeanie. I like singing, traveling, being outside, playing video games, and trying lots of different foods. I studied Japanese in college and actually went to school in Tokyo for a summer! Now I work a full-time job, teach a Japanese study group once or twice a week, participate in a local anime club, take care of two crazy bunny rabbits, and volunteer for Tekkoshocon.

I am the event chair for Tekkoshocon X. That means I’m responsible for coordinating with Gogal, the Wyndham Grand, and all of the volunteers planning this year’s Tekkoshocon so that we can work as a team to achieve our goals. I’ll be talking a little about our goals for this year in the months to come, but here are a few examples:

  • Tekkoshocon X events will be high quality and enjoyable. This means we’re not just putting things into rooms to fill time — instead, we are dedicated to presenting fun programming that people will value. (We already work hard at this, but some goals are so important that we need to restate them each year to remind ourselves of our priorities!)
  • Tekkoshocon X will integrate into the surrounding community in a positive manner. One of Tekkoshocon’s greatest assets is the nature of Pittsburgh itself. We have lots of good neighbors we think you’ll love and who would love to meet you! Tekkoshocon’s parent company, Tekkoshocon Inc., works hard to participate in the Pittsburgh community through activities like the annual Kennywood Day and screenings at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont. Tekkoshocon itself will start to do the same this year.
  • Convention planning work will be done with enough lead time to ensure minimum spending and maximum quality. As volunteer organizers, we have a responsibility to all of you who support us through registering for Tekko. Not only do we need to make sure that you feel your registration was worth what you spent, but we also need to ensure that we use your registration dollars wisely so that we can continue to host Tekkoshocon for you for many years to come.
I started out with Tekkoshocon as the Publications/Publicity department head for Tekkoshocon I. Why was I the department head? I was the only one who volunteered! In addition to writing some of the copy for the flyers we sent, I was responsible for collecting all the information for the program book and laying it out before it went to press. But that’s not where my work ended! I’ve got lots of funny and interesting stories about Tekko I and all the years of Tekko that I look forward to sharing with you.
I had only been to one real convention before I started volunteering for Tekkoshocon staff. It’s not a choice that would be best for everyone, but I am happy to have made it for myself because I’ve learned a ton and met a lot of hard working, fun, selfless people who are also great friends. I hope you enjoy this window into our crazy world as we plan and run Tekkoshocon X!
